What to put in the nursery

Arranging the nursery for the arrival of your baby is a process that is both exciting and frightening. It is fun to think about the various ways of decorating it and imagining how your baby is going to feel in their new room but on the other hand, there is that constant anxiety that you will forget something important. As a parent, it is your responsibility to provide for your baby everything they need. That’s why we prepared this short list of absolutely essential nursery equipment.

Bassinet

A bassinet is the one thing you probably are not going to forget but it is still worth mentioning it. If you want the best bassinet for your baby, get something that can be easily transported between rooms. Chances are you are going to want to spend as much time with your newborn as possible so a compact bassinet that is lightweight is a very good choice for every parent. This way you can easily have your baby with you wherever you are, whether it’s the nursery, the bedroom or the living room.

Crib

For the first few months, you are probably going to opt for a bassinet rather than a crib but it’s recommended to purchase it before the baby comes so that you don’t have to worry about it in the frenzy of taking care of a newborn. It has to be tall enough to keep your baby safe inside – the recommended height is at least 26 inches above the mattress. Also, the slats cannot be too wide apart with 2 inches being just around right. Additionally, you will need to make sure that you have a mattress (it may or may not come with the crib itself) and some mattress pads that will keep the mattress from getting dirty should your baby drool on it or have a leaking diaper.

Changing table

You will also need a place to change your baby’s diapers and a changing table is the most practical way to do it. Many changing tables have a lot of storage space so that you can put all the diaper gear right where you need it. Remember about purchasing a large supply of disposable diapers, baby wipes and a few tubs of diaper cream.

Rocking chair/glider

You will spend a lot of time in the nursery so you should also make it comfortable for you. Get whatever chair you feel is the most comfortable, even if it’s a simple armchair. Late feedings and reading picture books to your baby will take up a lot of your time so you might as well rest while you’re at it.

Baby monitor

The usefulness of a baby monitor simply cannot be overstated. Knowing how your child is doing even when you have to leave them alone for a moment is sure to bring you peace. Stressing about the state of your child is not worth it if you can alleviate these worries with a baby monitor.
